Documentaries & Films about LGBT Issues/Advocates/Struggles

Vito Russo Test for LGBT Movies or Films.

These are films that I think could easily be used in a History class!  I'll add more as I see them.  Happy to include recommendations if shared with me. :)

The Imitation Game (2014)

Feature film about Alan Turing,a gay British cryptanalyst who cracked the German code during WWII.  After his enormous contribution to the war, he is shunned after the war, after his homosexuality is revealed.  In 1952 he is convicted of aIndecency and sentenced to chemical castration. (And eventually commits suicide, but I don’t remember that being shown in the film, just a footnote at the end)

The Celluloid Closet (1995)

Documentary about the history of queer stereotypes in film, and coded homophobic language/characters within the film industry.

The Times of Harvey Milk (1984)

Original documentary about the life & impact of Harvey Milk, America’s first openly gay elected official from San Francisco during the 1970's.

Milk (2008)

Feature film version of Harvey Milk’s life by Gus Van Sant.

The Lavender Scare (2016)

Documentary about the US government’s efforts to remove & ban LGBT individuals from working in government positions during the 1950's, based on an Executive Order from President Eisenhower.  Includes the inspiring activism of Frank Kameny that followed.

Stonewall (2015) & (1995)

Feature films about the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and the strengthening of the LGBT rights movement.  While the 2015 film has been criticized for white-washing and glossing up things, many think it’s still worth watching.  An article about this: http://www.advocate.com/commentary/2015/9/25/defense-stonewall

Brother Outsider (2003)

PBS documentary on Bayard Rustin - enormously influential Civil Rights organizer, gay man and close associate of MLK Jr.

Pride (2014)

British film about U.K. gay activists participating in the Miners' Strike of 1984

How to Survive a Plague (2014)

Documentary about the AIDS epidemic in the US and the work of activist organizations trying to fight it.

Hi Alicia!
Two other great documentary films that I've seen on Netflix (not sure if they are still there or available elsewhere) are

"Matthew Shepard is a Friend of Mine"
and
"Screaming Queens" (on trans community in SF and Compton's Cafeteria riot in '66)
